Why IV Therapy Works Differently Than Supplements

When you take a supplement by mouth, it passes through your digestive system before anything reaches your bloodstream. Depending on the nutrient, your gut health, and how well you absorb, you might get 20 to 50 percent of what is on the label. The rest is lost.

IV therapy bypasses digestion entirely. Nutrients go directly into your bloodstream at full concentration, which means your body can actually use them. The difference is noticeable for most clients. Energy comes back faster, recovery happens sooner, and the effects tend to be more consistent than what you get from oral supplements alone.

That does not mean IV therapy replaces a good diet or daily vitamins. It means that when you need a targeted dose of specific nutrients, whether for energy, immune support, recovery, or cellular health, delivering them intravenously is the most efficient way to get them where they need to go.

Is IV Therapy Right For You?

Most healthy adults can benefit from IV therapy. If you're dealing with persistent fatigue, recovering from illness, preparing for travel, or just not getting what you need from oral supplements, an IV infusion delivers nutrients at concentrations your gut can't match.

It's also a natural fit if you're already doing other treatments here. Vitamin C supports collagen production alongside microneedling and NAD+ complements hormone optimization. When I already have your bloodwork and health history, I can recommend formulations that connect to what we're already working on together.

Because I'm a nurse practitioner, I review your medications and health history before recommending anything. IV therapy isn't one-size-fits-all, and some formulations aren't appropriate for certain conditions. I'll tell you what makes sense for your body, not just what's on the menu.

You should not get IV therapy if you have kidney disease, heart failure, or a history of fluid overload. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, some formulations are off the table. I screen for all of this before we start.

The IV Drip Menu at Contour Medical

  • The one most people start with, and the one most people come back for. The Myers Cocktail combines magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and Vitamin C into a single infusion that covers a lot of ground. Energy, immune support, hydration, recovery, and general "I just feel better" wellness. If you're dealing with fatigue, seasonal colds, stress, or you're just run down and can't point to why, this is where I usually recommend starting. It takes 30 to 45 minutes, and most clients feel the difference within a few hours.

Not recommended if you have kidney disease, congestive heart failure, or abnormal potassium or magnesium levels.

  • NAD+ is a coenzyme your body uses for energy production, DNA repair, and cellular maintenance. Your levels drop as you age, which is part of why recovery slows down, mental sharpness fades, and energy doesn't bounce back the way it used to.

An NAD+ infusion delivers this coenzyme at concentrations oral supplements can't touch. Clients report better mental clarity, steadier energy, improved focus, and faster recovery from physical and mental fatigue. It also supports healthy aging at a cellular level, which is why it's become one of the most in-demand wellness IVs available. Not many clinics in the Niagara region offer it.

NAD+ infusions take longer than other drips, usually 90 minutes to two hours. The infusion rate needs to be gradual for comfort, so this one isn't a lunch-break visit. But the clients who do it consistently say it's worth the time.

Not recommended if you have active cancer or a strong family history of cancer, serious cardiovascular conditions, or are on medications that affect mitochondrial function. NAD+ supplementation is not recommended for those with autoimmune conditions. Always

  • Vitamin C is essential for immune function, collagen production, antioxidant protection, and cellular repair. When delivered intravenously, it reaches blood concentrations 50 to 100 times higher than what oral supplements can achieve. At those levels, the effect on your immune system and your skin is significantly more powerful than anything you can swallow.

This is the drip clients reach for during cold and flu season, before international travel, during recovery from illness, and when they want to support skin radiance from the inside out. Vitamin C is a building block of collagen, so if you're doing microneedling or other skin treatments, there's a direct connection between what you infuse and how your skin responds.

Not recommended if you have G6PD deficiency, kidney disease, a history of kidney stones, or hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder).

  • Your body's most powerful antioxidant. Glutathione supports detoxification, reduces oxidative stress, brightens skin, and protects cells from damage. Your body produces it naturally, but production drops with age, stress, poor sleep, alcohol, and environmental exposure. When levels fall, you feel it as general sluggishness, dull skin, and slower recovery.

Glutathione can be administered as a standalone IV drip or added as a booster to any other infusion. Many clients add it to their Myers Cocktail or Vitamin C drip for an extra layer of antioxidant and skin-brightening support. If you're looking for that "my skin just looks healthier" effect alongside your other treatments, this is usually the add-on I suggest.

Not recommended if you have severe liver or kidney impairment.

What to Expect From Your IV Therapy Appointment

01. Before your infusion.

I will ask about your health goals, any medications you are taking, and what you are hoping to get out of the session. If you are a returning client, I already have this context and we can get started quickly.

02. During the infusion.

A small IV line is placed in your arm, similar to a standard blood draw. Once it is in, you sit comfortably for the duration of the drip. Most clients read, work on their phone, or just relax. The infusion takes 30 to 60 minutes for most formulations. NAD+ takes longer, usually 90 minutes to two hours.

03. After.

There is no downtime. You can go right back to your day. Most clients feel a boost within hours, though some notice the effects more the next day. There is no restriction on activity after your infusion.

04. How often.

It depends on your goals. Some clients come monthly as part of a regular wellness routine. Others come quarterly, seasonally before cold and flu season, or before specific events like travel or a physically demanding period. I can recommend a schedule based on your goals.

  • It depends on your goals. Some clients come monthly for energy and immune maintenance. Others come seasonally, before travel, or during recovery periods. There is no single schedule that works for everyone. I can recommend a frequency based on your health goals and, if appropriate, your bloodwork.

  • The IV insertion feels like a standard blood draw. Once the line is in, most clients do not feel it at all. If you have small or difficult veins, I will take extra care with placement. The infusion itself is painless.

  • Yes, when administered by a qualified healthcare provider. I am a licensed nurse practitioner and I supervise every infusion. I review your health history and medications before recommending any formulation to ensure it is appropriate for your situation.

  • Absolutely. Many clients pair IV therapy with other services at Contour Medical. Some use Vitamin C or Glutathione drips to support collagen production and brightening alongside microneedling or skin treatments. Others include IV therapy as part of their HRT wellness routine. If you are doing multiple treatments, I can help you plan the timing so everything works together.

  • IV therapy delivers nutrients through an intravenous drip over 30 to 120 minutes, allowing for higher doses and more complex formulations. Vitamin injections are quick intramuscular shots that take about 30 seconds and deliver a single targeted nutrient like B12 or D3. Both have their place. If you want a quick boost, injections are convenient. If you want a full infusion with multiple nutrients at therapeutic doses, IV therapy is the better option.

Why Clients Choose Contour Medical Aesthetics & Wellness for IV Therapy in St. Catharines

I am a licensed nurse practitioner, and that distinction matters for IV therapy. We don’t just select a bag and start an infusion. I understand your whole health picture, your medications, your bloodwork, and how IV therapy fits into your overall wellness plan. If you are already a Contour Medical client, IV therapy integrates with your existing care. Your HRT, your bloodwork, your aesthetics, and your IV therapy all live under one roof with one provider. That means I can spot connections that a standalone IV therapy clinic would miss, like recommending NAD+ alongside your hormone optimization, or timing a Vitamin C drip to support collagen production before a microneedling series.
