Sometimes Spots and Redness Don't Go Away on Their Own
You've tried the serums. You've been religious about sunscreen. And the brown spots are still there. The redness across your cheeks still flares up for no reason. The little broken capillaries on your nose aren't going anywhere no matter what you layer on top of them.
That's because the problem isn't on the surface. It's underneath. Serums and creams can only reach the outermost layer of your skin, and the pigment and blood vessels causing what you see in the mirror? They're deeper than that. They were never going to budge.
IPL gets to them. It sends light energy into the skin that targets the melanin in those dark spots and the hemoglobin in the blood vessels causing the redness. Your body breaks it down and clears it naturally. What's left is your actual skin tone, not what years of sun damage put on top of it.
No scalpels. No peeling. No hiding at home for a week.
What an IPL Photofacial Actually Does
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike lasers that use a single wavelength, IPL delivers a range of light wavelengths into the skin, which makes it versatile enough to treat pigmentation and redness in the same session.
I use Dye-VL technology, an advanced IPL platform that's more targeted than older IPL devices. It delivers energy specifically to the pigment and blood vessels causing the discolouration, while leaving the surrounding skin alone.
The result is straightforward: Dark spots darken and flake off over one to two weeks. Redness fades gradually as the treated blood vessels are reabsorbed by your body. What's left is a clearer, more even complexion.
How an IPL Photofacial Session Works
01. The Consultation
I assess your skin first to confirm IPL is the right treatment. Not all discolouration responds to IPL so we’ll want to confirm this before. Some pigmentation concerns are better addressed with chemical peels, microneedling, or laser, and I'll tell you that directly if it applies to you.
02. The Treatment
The treatment itself takes 20 to 30 minutes. You'll feel a warm snapping sensation, similar to a rubber band against the skin. Most clients tolerate it easily without any numbing.
03. The Recovery
Afterward, you leave. That's it. There's no real downtime. Pigmented spots will look darker for a few days before they flake off naturally over the following week. Your skin might be slightly pink for a few hours. For the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment:
Avoid direct sun exposure and wear SPF 30 or higher
Skip hot showers, saunas, and heavy exercise
Hold off on retinoids, exfoliants, and active skincare
Let the darkened spots flake off on their own. Do not pick or scrub them
04. The Results
Most clients see noticeable improvement after one to two sessions. For optimal results, I recommend three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart. Some clients pair IPL with skin boosters to address both colour and hydration at the same time. During your consultation, I'll tell you exactly how many sessions make sense for what you're dealing with.
One thing I tell every IPL client: SPF is non-negotiable. Before and after treatment. Sun exposure between sessions can cause new pigmentation, and that would undo the work we're doing together.

Is IPL Right For You?
Most of the clients I treat with IPL have been dealing with the same thing for years. Brown spots that showed up one summer and never left. Redness that used to come and go but now just stays. Broken capillaries across the nose or cheeks that get a little worse every year. Sometimes it's the face, other times it's the neck, the chest, the backs of hands. All the places that got the most sun and now, show it the most.
They've usually tried topicals already. Good ones. And the topicals helped with texture or hydration, but the colour didn't change because it can't. The pigment and the blood vessels causing what they see are deeper than anything you can put on top of your skin.
That's what IPL is built for. If the concern is colour (too much pigment, too much redness, visible blood vessels), and it's in skin that hasn't been heavily tanned or isn't naturally dark, IPL is usually the most effective option I can offer. It handles diffuse damage across a larger area better than most lasers because it isn't limited to a single wavelength.
If your skin tone is deeper, that changes the conversation. IPL works by targeting contrast between the pigment and your surrounding skin, and when there isn't enough contrast, the treatment either wouldn’t work effectively or could cause irritation. I'll tell you that directly during your consultation, and if IPL isn't the right fit, I'll point you to what is. I don't do treatments that aren't going to get you a result.
After a few session, most of my clients stop thinking about it. They stop angling their face away from natural light. They stop reaching for concealer before a video call. The spots and redness were never life-threatening, but they were always there, and not having to think about them anymore changes how you feel about your skin in a way that's hard to explain until it happens.
What Happens if you Keep Waiting?
Sun spots don't fade with time. They darken. Redness from rosacea progresses if it's not managed. The capillaries multiply. None of these concerns reverse on their own, and treating them earlier means fewer sessions and better outcomes. Waiting another year means there's more to correct.
Frequently Asked Questions About IPL Photofacial
-
IPL uses broad-spectrum light across multiple wavelengths, which makes it effective for treating diffuse pigmentation and redness over larger areas. Lasers use a single, concentrated wavelength and are better suited for targeted concerns like deep scars or skin resurfacing. For sun spots, rosacea, and broken capillaries spread across the face, IPL is often the more effective option.

Most clients describe a warm snapping sensation, like a rubber band flicking against the skin. It's tolerable for most people without numbing. If you're concerned about discomfort, let me know during your consultation and I'll walk you through what to expect for your specific treatment areas.

Three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart for optimal results. Some clients see significant improvement after just one or two sessions, depending on the severity of the pigmentation or redness. I'll give you an honest recommendation based on your skin during the consultation.

Yes. IPL is one of the most effective treatments for rosacea and broken capillaries. It works by targeting the blood vessels that cause persistent facial redness, reducing both the baseline redness and the frequency of flare-ups. Many of my rosacea clients say it's the first treatment that made a real difference.
Why Clients Choose Contour Medical Aesthetics & Wellness for IPL Photofacial in St. Catharines
Not every case of discolouration is an IPL case. Melasma, for example, can look a lot like sun damage but responds poorly to IPL and can actually get worse with the wrong light treatment. I assess your skin as a medical concern, not a menu selection, and I will tell you directly if IPL is not the right approach for what you are dealing with.
When you come in, I assess your skin first and tell you what I actually see, not just what is on the booking form. If IPL is not the right fit, I will say so and point you to what is. If it is the right fit, I use Dye-VL technology that delivers more precise energy than standard IPL devices, which means better results with less irritation. And I do every session myself, so the person who built your plan is the same person holding the handpiece.
If you have been layering concealer over sun spots and redness for years and want to know whether IPL can actually fix it, that is exactly what this consultation is for.
